ACCOLADES

 

The Accolades section is intended to emphasize recent accomplishments of our faculty, post docs and staff.  By highlighting these items, we hope to let each of you share in the team successes of The Miami Project.

 

 

Edelle Field-Fote, Ph.D.

Edelle C. Field-Fote and colleagues published in the October 2009 Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation a paper titled, Gait quality is improved by locomotor training in individuals with SCI regardless of training approach, Carla FJ Nooijen, Nienke ter Hoeve,

Edelle C Field-Fote.  It was the most downloaded article in the past 30 days for the month following its release.

 

In addition, Dr. Field-Fote’s lab (Ness LL, Field-Fote EC. ) published Whole-body vibration improves walking function in individuals with spinal cord injury: a pilot study. Gait & Posture, 30:436-440, 2009.

 

Dr. Field-Fote was appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy.

 

Helen Bramlett, Ph.D.

Dr. Helen Bramlett spoke at the 7th Annual Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Conference in November and the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Coconut Grove, Florida. The title of her talk was Sex Differences in CNS Injury and Recovery.

 

 

 

 

 

 

M. Ross Bullock, M.D., Ph.D.

In 2009, Dr. M. Ross Bullock was appointed as the Chair of the Department of Defense Congressionally mandated Advisory Board for Traumatic Brain Injury.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mark S. Nash, Ph.D.

Dr. Mark Nash presented a paper on Resistance-Endurance Exercise Improves Fasting and Postprandial Lipids, and Glycemic Regulation in Two Men with Tetraplegia for the Congress on Spinal Cord Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dallas, TX, September, 2009.

 

Dr. Mark Nash presented an invited seminar on Meeting the Challenge of Cardiovascular Disease and Exercise After Spinal Cord Injuryfor the 2009 Assembly of the American Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Austin, TX, October, 2009.

 

 

Nancy L. Brackett, Ph.D.

Dr. Nancy Brackett was inducted as President of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology in October, 2009. The induction took place at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gillian Hotz, Ph.D., Co-Director of the Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program, received the David Hovda Angel Award. The annual award ispresented by the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation to a clinician who exemplifies compassion and commitment for pediatric acquired brain injured children, young adults and their families.

 

Dr. Shyam Gajavelli from Dr. Jacqueline Sagen’s lab competed for and won a travel award by NIDA - NIH to present his poster at the 3rd Annual Julius Axelrod Lecture in Chicago, Illinois. The poster describes their work on gene transfer of peptide analgesics.

 

Eva Widerstrom-Noga, Ph.D.

Dr. Eva Widerstrom-Noga gave a keynote lecture at the 2009 Congress on Spinal Cord Medicine and Rehabilitation in Dallas. She also moderated a workshop entitled Assessment and classification of SCI-related pain: basic and clinical perspectives.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Suzanne M. Sayfie

Suzie Sayfie, Executive Director of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, was inducted into Iron Arrow, the University of Miami’s highest honor and oldest tradition, on November 5, 2009.  The honor is bestowed upon individuals who best exemplify the five qualities of Iron Arrow: love of alma mater, character, leadership, scholarship, and humility.

 

 

 

 


 

Kim Anderson-Erisman, Ph.D.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Kim Anderson-Erisman gave two invited lectures at the 2009 Congress on Spinal Cord Medicine and Rehabilitation in Dallas. One lecture was on Identifying priorities, measuring functionally relevant outcomes, and translating research throughout the SCI community and the other was on Scientists, Clinicians, and Our Partners with SCI: Communicating Dreams, Goals, and Practicalities.

 

Dr. Kim Anderson-Erisman also gave an invited lecture regarding New Research Resulting From Recommendations From the Functional Outcomes Working Group in a workshop at the 2009 International Spinal Cord Society 48th Annual Meeting in Florence, Italy.

 

Dr. Kim Anderson-Erisman published an invited article in October regarding Consideration of user priorities when developing neural prosthetics. J. Neural Eng. 6, 055003. She also published two articles with colleagues in November in the journal Experimental Neurology entitled Bilateral cervical contusion spinal cord injury in rats. Exp. Neurol. 220:9-22 and Forelimb Locomotor Assessment Scale (FLAS): A New Tool to Assess Forelimb Dysfunction After Cervical Spinal Cord Injury. Exp. Neurol. 220:23-33.
